The first Katy ISD school to build a student-led oncology research and education organization — dedicated to making a real impact in the field of cancer research.
"To understand cancer is to understand life, at its most fragile and most resilient."

SLHS Cancer Research Society is a student-led non-profit organization focused on cancer education, research, mentorship, and emerging discoveries shaping cancer care. SLHS CRS brings HS students into science before college through our attendance/presentations at national conferences such as AACR, in collaboration with MD Anderson & Emory researchers.
Four ways we put students inside real science.
Meetings, labs, mentorship, and outreach — a full year designed to take members from curiosity to published research.
Bi-monthly meetings every other Monday, each centered around a specific topic in cancer biology — immunology, pathology, genetics — paired with a discussion of recent cancer research. Labs' major events and field trips run separately throughout the year.
Free programs for every stage of the research journey: one-on-one research mentorship, an assisted cold-emailing program, and a collaborative experience where members research alongside our team and present at the AACR Annual Conference.
Two major lab experiences each year. In the fall, members run a pathology analysis of 100+ tissue slides with guidance on cellular characteristics; in the spring, a bacterial transformation lab anchors lessons on immunology and viruses.
Two major volunteer events a year, including cards created and delivered to patients at Texas Children's Hospital. For 2026-2027, we're expanding to outreach through educational programs at Baylor College of Medicine to grow cancer awareness in our community.
A year of memories and accomplishments.
Everything you need to get started.
Not at all — most members join with zero research experience. Our free research programs walk you through finding a mentor, shaping a question, and eventually beginning your own research.
Three. Our flagship one-on-one mentorship is built for newcomers — guidance on developing a question, finding and contacting mentors, navigating the process, and understanding the path to publication. A specialized outreach program leverages our connections at MD Anderson and Emory to cold-email professors and physicians whose work matches your interests. And our collaborative program puts you alongside our team on active projects — scientific investigation, data analysis, and manuscript prep, with the potential to present at future AACR Annual Meetings.
All Seven Lakes HS students can officially join through our registration form. At the start of each year, members pay a $15 fee for access to all meetings, labs, events, and trips. Students from other Katy ISD schools can get involved through our outreach projects. As a registered non-profit, all donations go toward club development and research opportunities.

Bring your curiosity — we'll bring the mentors, the labs, and the conferences. The next generation of cancer researchers starts with the students in this room.
